Microsoft FINALLY have stable OneDrive app for SharePoint Sites

Anyone who has used Microsoft Office365 and SharePoint online and then tried to sync with their local machine using OneDrive for Business will understand the pain we have gone through, as a business and reseller, with the abundant amounts of Sync Error and issues trying to share and sync your files.

Last year Microsoft finally allowed your OneDrive documents on a business plan to use the separate OneDrive Application and not OneDrive for Business – this alone was a huge step as the application is a lot more stable and error free than OneDrive for Business.

Well now they have gone one step further – you can now sync your SharePoint files and folders using the same application and scraped the useless OneDrive for Business application altogether.

This move has not been heavily publicised, and is not the default setting when syncing new SharePoint library’s – but it is possible by following a few simple steps shown below.

To follow the below steps you must be a SharePoint or Global Administrator of your Office365 tenancy.

Enable the “New Sync Client” in SharePoint Admin Center

  1. Log into Office365 Online

Office365

3. Find the setting “Sync Client for SharePoint” and change from “Start the old client” to “Start the new client”. This change can take a few hours to propagate – so I would advise making this change and leaving at least 3-4 hours, if not overnight before continuing.

Once you have changed the settings in Step 3 and allowed them to propagate via the various Microsoft Data Center’s you are now ready to update you OneDrive client and start your SharePoint Library’s Syncing in the new application.

4. Log back into Office365 online and navigate to a SharePoint Library that you would like to sync.

  • Click the Sync Icon.

  • You will be given a pop up box with the option to “Get the latest version of OneDrive”. Click this link to download.  Once downloaded simply run the installer.
  • Once you have the latest version of OneDrive and click Sync, you will be presented with the popup below, asking if you would like to switch applications from your browser. If all has gone to plan and your settings have propagated, then it should ask to open “Microsoft One Drive” and NOT “Microsoft OneDrive for Business”.

5. Simply follow the on-screen instructions and choose your local library destination and allow the application to download your files.

BE AWARE – THIS PROCESS WILL DOWNLOAD YOUR PREVIOUSLY SYNC’D LIBRARY TO ANOTHER LOCATION ON YOUR DEVICE BY DEFAULT.  YOU WILL THEN NEED TO DELETE YOUR OLD FILES AND CHANGE ANY SHORTCUTS YOU MAY HAVE PREVIOUSLY CREATED.

Hopefully the above article is helpful, and if you would like any further advice please do not hesitate to contact either myself or the MSC office.  If you are a MSC client with an existing support contract and you would like us to make the above changes for you, simply log a support ticket and one of our consultants will be in touch and work with you to make the requested changes.
